B.D.S. or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is an undergraduate Dentistry course. The duration of Bachelor of Dental Surgery course is 4-5 years of study with internship and without internship, Manipal College of Dental Sciences offers the course in the mentioned formats. The B.D.S. course is divided into 2 or more semesters. The course can be pursued either as a Full Time Graduate Course or Part Time Graduate Course i.e. through Correspondence or Distance Education depending upon one’s choice. After M.B.B.S., Bachelor of Dental Surgery is one the most sought after course in the field of medical science. B.D.S. enables one to become a Dentist. Dental Courses comprise didactic lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, seminars, clinical work and conferences. Aspiring candidates learn about various forms of treatment including Surgical Procedures, Dental materials, Dental anatomy & Oral histology, Oral Pathology, Community Dentistry, Pedodontics, Oral Medicine & Radiology etc. which are some of the topics that are generally taught. There are various Dental Schools and Dental Colleges which impart the education of bachelor in dentistry.

BDS – Bachelor in Dental Surgery Eligibility

Dental School Requirements include H.S.C. (10+2) with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50% marks. Admission to graduate courses in dentistry is through a general, nationwide competitive examination.

Entrance Examinations are conducted in major cities all over India. Advertisements are given, regarding issue of Application forms for Common Entrance Examination, important dates etc., in all leading newspapers all over India are also notified.

The All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Exam conducted by the CBSE is common for both the M.B.B.S. and the Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS). The allocation of institutions is based on merit.

Other than the centrally run medical institutions there is at least one dental college in most states, where admission is governed by domiciliary status. But to be eligible for practice, one must ensure that the course chosen is approved by the Dental Council of India

 

MDS – Master in Dental Surgery:

Duration : 3 Years

Level : Post Graduation

Type :  Degree

Eligibility : MBBS/BDS

 

MDS or Master of Dental Surgery is a postgraduate Dentistry course. Dentistry is the branch of medicine dealing with the anatomy and development and diseases of the teeth. The duration of Master of Dental Surgery is generally three years, however there is a provision of two years M.D.S. Course for candidates who have passed Post Graduate Diploma course recognized by the DCI of the duration of two years in particular specialty. The maximum time period to complete the course may vary, as per Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University the maximum time period is six years. The programs foster development of critical analysis, research skills, and advanced clinical skills that will be recognized for specialist registration. Dental Council of India (D.C.I) is the regulatory body for Dental courses and various dental institutes have to adhere to the regulations provided. The duration of the course is three years and it is career orienting in nature:

MDS – Master in Dental Surgery Eligibility:

The      minimum qualification for this course is Bachelor of Dental Surgery      (B.D.S) or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Dental Council of      India. Candidate not possessing a recognized Dental qualification for the      above purpose should secure the prior approval of his qualifications by      the Dental Council of India before he can be admitted to the M.D.S. course      of any University in India.

The Age      Limit is mostly 21 years of age. The selection of students to M.D.S. is      based on the merit of the candidate and for the determination of merit.      All India Common Entrance Test (AICET) is conducted by various Dental      Colleges or by the agency specified by the University Grants Commission,      New Delhi.

Foreign      Nationals seeking admission for the Post Graduate course in various      institutes must procure temporary registration by Dental Council of India      for the duration of the Post graduate training restricted to the dental      college to which he/she is admitted A      Candidate should be physically fit to undergo the M.D.S course and should      not suffer from any contagious disease.
